The CMS analysis group in Florence is active in the study of the Higgs boson decaying to W boson pairs. This channel has a very large cross section and is thus very important for a precise determination of the Higgs couplings, but it has large backgrounds, espetially when addressing rare production mechanisms such as associated production with a vector boson or vector boson fusion.
The student joininig this project will study the use of deep learning techniques to achieve better signal/background separation. He/She will work in collaboration with the group, using the available ROOT based framework for data and simulation and will study how to plug-in deep neural network tools such as Keras and Tensor-Flow. He/She will study in particular the extraction of the elusive vector boson scattering Higgs production mechanism.
